Titans Do Well At First Cross Country Meet

Brea, Calif. - Loyola Marymount on the female side and the men of Long Beach State dominated the fields to win their respective races Saturday morning in the 2011 Asics Season Opener Cross Country Meet hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park near Brea.

LMU totaled 39 points with a 3-5-6-12-13 finish led by Veronica Wallington in third place at 22:14.8 for the 6K course. The 49ers scored only 25 points with a 1-3-6-7-8 finish led by individual winner Heath Reedy, who covered the 8K course in 25:08.4. Rosa Del Toro of Long Beach was the female winner in 22:03.7.

Host Fullerton placed second (58 pts.) in the men's and fourth (133 pts.) in the women's race. The Titan men were led by second-place finisher Tyler Reed in 25:19.3 with John Carrell (25:24.8) in fourth and Marco Zaragoza (25.44.2) in fifth.

The Titan women ran fourth led by eighth-place finisher Grace Gonzales in 22:47.5.

"It was great to see Grace running back to her all-conference form of 2008," said Fullerton Head Coach John Elders. "She missed 2009 with an injury and never got back to form last season. Our women's team is young and has potential. We will get better as the season progresses.

"The men did a good job today and are definitely improved over last season. We had a nice pack and have the potential to have a good season."
