One Goal Short

By Allen Bacon, Bosco Fullerton

Ever since last season when the Sunny Hills of Fullerton Girls Soccer Team lost a tough quarterfinal match in the CIF Playoffs, the Lady Lancers had only one goal and that goal was not only to get back to the CIF Playoffs but to be CIF Champions in 2012. In fact they wore that goal on the back of their practice jerseys all season long.

Last night on a soccer field in Mission Viejo, the Lady Lancers fell just one goal short of that goal.

A second half goal was all Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga needed for a 1-0 win in the CIF-SS Division 2 championship match Sat. March 3. The game was played at Mission Viejo High Stadium.

Defense played a big part in this game especially in the first half of the match, as both teams limited scoring opportunities

Sunny Hills had a great scoring opportunity late in the first half, on a free kick by senior Brittany Aanderud. But Aanderud's shot was swept aside by a Los Oso player.

The Lady Lancers opened the second half with Aanderud, Sarah Fajnor and Maribell Morales mounting an agressive attack which was halted by the Los Oso defense.

Sunny Hills had one last try in the final seconds, but a shot by Shawna Wilson sailed over the crossbar as the whistle blew.

Sunny Hills (30-2) set school records for victories in a season and the most shutouts in as season in the school's history.

There is an extremely good chance that the Lady Lancers will receive a bid to play in the State Championship. The pairings will be announced today.
