LOGAN, UT - Utah State's Kendra Pemberton scored her first goal of the season, a rocket from 20 yards out, just 58 seconds into the second overtime period Sunday afternoon, lifting the host Aggies to a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton at Bell Field in Logan, UT.
It was the third overtime match (and the second double overtime contest) in the first five contests of the 2011 season for the Titans, who fell to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in extra time this season. The win kept Utah State's school-record start intact as the Aggies improved to 6-0 overall on the year.
Pemberton's winning strike came after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, taking a long pass down the right side from teammate Jennifer Flynn, and ripping a shot into the back of the net with just under a minute gone in the second overtime.
Fullerton had a golden opportunity snuffed twice by Aggies' goalkeeper Molli Merrill, who finished with eight saves on the afternoon, as Stacey Fox and Lauren Stupin were both denied on the doorstep to keep the match scoreless. Then, in the 97th minute, the Titans thought they had the match won as Nikki McCants found the back of the net only to have the goal disallowed by an offsides call.
Utah State outshot Fullerton, 19-13, for the match and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic finished with five saves for the Titans, who were led by Fox's three shots on the afternoon. Pemberton had a match-high six shots for the Aggies.
Cal State Fullerton looks to reverse its fortunes at home next weekend as the Titans host Loyola Marymount on Friday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m. before welcoming Columbia for a 1 p.m. kick-off on Sunday (Sept. 11).
